Q: How much money does a starting character get?

The starting money for a character was deleted from the manuscript by mistake and so missed out in the layout. It should be 1000 Shards.

Q: What equipment does a starting character get?

Starting equipment is whatever the player buys with a value of upto 1000 Shards. The amount you start with doesn't necessarily mean that you have just gone out and spent money on new things but rather the amount of equipment you start with a value of upto 1000 Shards (it could be inherited or given to the character). A player can write about how they gained their equipment in their character notes. Any money left over once you have your starting gear is discarded if more that 100 Shards (down to a maximum of 100 Shards) and kept if less than 100 Shards.

Example: if Damien has spent 750 Shards on starting equipment, he will have to discard 150 Shards to leave him will 100 Shards in his possession. A character that spends 980 Shards on equipment will only have 20 Shards in their possession.

Q: What skills does a character start with?

A character doesn't start with any skills, he/she just relies on attribute tests without bonus at Rank 1. As they gain ranks they can choose profession skills from the list to boost attribute tests for various skills i.e. a rank 1 rogue trying to balance across a wall will make a thievery (difficulty 10) test. A rank 3 rogue may have  balance+1 (chosen when gaining a rank) and so receives a bonus to that test.
