EXTRACT FROM QUERP MODERN HEROES CAPTAIN MEGATON The good Captain Megaton began life as Rickard "Ricky" Faulkner, a typical mid-western American kid, going to college on a football scholarship before entering the Army during the 1950’s. With good enough grades he was accepted into Officer Candidate School and rose through the ranks to Captain during the early Cold War. When he joined Army Research he was part of a program researching advanced nuclear science and as misfortune would have it he was caught in a terrible accident; the explosion took out the underground lab and everyone in it. The only survivor was Captain Faulkner, who walked out of the ruin seemingly unscathed and encased in a green glow. Soon enough, the Army found a use for Captain Faulkner. Renaming him Captain Megaton he became a poster boy for American strength-at-arms. He fought America’s enemies both at home and abroad, most notably Professor Carnage who quickly became Captain Megaton’s most infamous nemesis; the two would fight regularly fight tremendous battles for almost twenty years. When the Cold War ended with the fall of the USSR and the Berlin Wall, Captain Megaton was all but discarded by the United States government; while he was still quite the powerhouse, the anti-nuclear sentiment spreading across the globe made him unpopular.
